A plain-English comparison of accreditation types and what they mean for PGT laboratory quality in Thailand, with questions to ask each clinic.

Accreditation is one way to check the quality of a PGT laboratory in Thailand, but it is not a single label. Different certificates cover different things: the hospital, the laboratory, the embryology service, or the genetic testing itself. This guide explains the main accreditation types you will see, compares how several Bangkok providers present their credentials, and gives you a checklist of questions to ask before you choose a clinic.

At a glance

  • Accreditation types are not interchangeable: JCI usually covers hospital-wide quality and safety; RTAC focuses on reproductive technology; CAP and ISO 15189 relate to laboratory testing; ISO 9001 is a general quality-management standard; UK NEQAS is an external quality-assessment scheme.
  • Some clinics hold multiple credentials; others list only one or none in their public profile. A missing credential is not proof of poor quality, but it is a question to ask.
  • PGT (preimplantation genetic testing) adds a genetics laboratory step. Ask whether that step is done in-house or sent to a partner lab, and who holds the accreditation for it.
  • Always request the current certificate scope, the expiry date, and the name of the accredited entity (hospital, clinic, or laboratory).
  • Use the hospital directory and hospital rankings to compare providers, and read our partner disclosure for relationship information.

Why accreditation matters for PGT

PGT involves several sensitive steps: embryo biopsy, cell handling, DNA amplification, sequencing, and interpretation. Each step has its own quality risks. Accreditation is a structured way for an outside body to check that a laboratory follows documented procedures, participates in proficiency testing, and meets defined standards. For international patients, it is one of the few quality signals you can verify before travelling.

However, accreditation does not guarantee a pregnancy, a healthy child, or a specific outcome. It also does not tell you whether a clinic is the right fit for your medical situation. Use it as one part of your decision, alongside the treating doctor’s experience, the laboratory pathway, and a written quotation.

Common accreditation types you may see in Thailand

Below is a plain-language summary of the credentials that appear in the approved provider profiles. The exact scope of each certificate can vary, so always confirm with the clinic.

Credential What it generally covers What to confirm
JCI (Joint Commission International) Hospital-wide quality and patient safety standards. Whether the fertility unit and laboratory are included in the current certificate.
RTAC (Reproductive Technology Accreditation Committee) Fertility and assisted-reproduction services, including laboratory and clinical components. The exact services and laboratory sites covered.
CAP (College of American Pathologists) Laboratory testing quality, including genetics and molecular testing. Which laboratory holds it and whether PGT is within its scope.
ISO 15189 Medical laboratory competence and quality. The specific laboratory and tests covered.
ISO 9001 General quality-management systems. Whether it applies to clinical services, laboratory, or both.
UK NEQAS External quality assessment for laboratory testing. Which tests are included and how results are used.

Some clinics also mention ESHRE-certified embryologists. This is an individual certification, not a laboratory accreditation, but it can be a useful indicator of embryology training.

How selected Bangkok providers present their accreditation

The following comparison is based on the approved hospital library profiles. It is an editorial overview, not a ranking by success rates or clinical outcomes. The order reflects our editorial comparison framework, with DHC first. Inclusion does not imply that one clinic is universally better than another. Always confirm current details directly.

Deep & Harmonicare IVF Center (DHC)

DHC is a dedicated fertility center in Bangkok’s Rama 9 area. Its approved profile states that it holds JCI, ISO 9001, RTAC, CAP and UK NEQAS certifications or quality credentials. Questions to ask each clinic about accreditation

Use these questions to compare providers on a like-for-like basis. Ask for written answers where possible.

  • Which accreditations does your clinic or hospital currently hold? Please provide the certificate name, the accredited entity, and the expiry date.
  • Does the accreditation cover the PGT laboratory specifically, or only the hospital or general laboratory?
  • Is PGT performed in-house or sent to an external laboratory? If external, which laboratory, and what accreditations does it hold?
  • Which PGT methods do you offer (for example, PGT-A, PGT-M, PGT-SR), and what technology is used (for example, NGS, Sanger sequencing)?
  • Who performs the embryo biopsy, and what is their training and certification?
  • How do you participate in external quality assessment (for example, UK NEQAS or similar)?
  • Can you provide a written quotation that lists all inclusions and exclusions, including medication, testing, freezing, storage, and transfer?
  • What is the current success rate definition you use, and what are the limitations of that figure for my individual situation?

Next-step checklist for international patients

  1. Shortlist 2–3 clinics from the hospital directory based on services, location, and accreditation information.
  2. Request the current accreditation certificates and scope for each clinic’s PGT laboratory.
  3. Ask whether PGT is in-house or outsourced, and who holds the relevant accreditation.
  4. Request a written quotation that clearly separates medical, laboratory, medication, and travel costs.
  5. Confirm the treating doctor’s credentials and experience with PGT for your specific situation.
  6. Ask how the clinic handles international patient coordination, including remote consultations and follow-up.
  7. Review the partner disclosure to understand any commercial relationships that may influence how providers are presented.

How to weigh accreditation in your decision

Accreditation is a useful filter, but it is not the only factor. A clinic with multiple credentials may still not be the right fit for your medical needs, and a clinic with fewer listed credentials may offer a laboratory pathway that suits you. Consider the full picture: the treating doctor’s experience, the laboratory’s PGT methods, the clarity of the quotation, the coordination for international patients, and how well the clinic answers your questions. Use accreditation as one part of a broader quality check, and always confirm details directly with the provider.

Frequently asked questions

What is the most important accreditation for PGT in Thailand?

There is no single most important accreditation. Different credentials cover different areas: JCI for hospital-wide quality and safety, RTAC for reproductive technology services, CAP and ISO 15189 for laboratory testing, and UK NEQAS for external quality assessment. For PGT specifically, ask which laboratory holds the accreditation and whether PGT is within its scope. A combination of relevant credentials may give you more confidence, but you should confirm the current certificate scope directly with the clinic.

Does accreditation guarantee a successful pregnancy?

No. Accreditation indicates that a facility or laboratory has met certain quality and safety standards, but it does not guarantee a pregnancy, a healthy child, or any specific clinical outcome. Success depends on many individual factors, including age, medical history, and the specific treatment plan. Treat accreditation as one quality signal among several, and discuss your individual situation with a qualified clinician.

How can I verify a clinic's accreditation?

Ask the clinic for a copy of the current certificate, including the name of the accredited entity, the scope of services covered, and the expiry date. You can also check the accrediting body's website if it maintains a public directory. For laboratory accreditations, confirm whether the PGT laboratory itself is covered or only a general laboratory. If a clinic cannot provide clear documentation, that is a point to explore further before committing.

What if a clinic does not list any accreditation?

A missing accreditation in a public profile does not automatically mean poor quality. Some clinics may hold credentials that are not listed online, or they may be in the process of obtaining them. Ask the clinic directly for its current accreditations and scope. If it has none, ask how it ensures laboratory quality, such as through internal audits, proficiency testing, or partnerships with accredited laboratories. Use this information alongside other factors in your decision.

Is PGT always done in the same laboratory as IVF?

Not always. Some clinics perform PGT in-house, while others send samples to an external genetics laboratory. The accreditation picture can differ depending on where the testing is done. If PGT is outsourced, ask which laboratory is used, what accreditations it holds, and how samples are transported and tracked. This helps you understand the full quality chain for your treatment.
